Care & Maintenance

Caring for Your Winston & Walter Equipment

At Winston & Walter, we believe great tools deserve a little love.

Whether you purchased one of our Signature Blue Liners, a wooden mold, or one of our HDPE molds, proper care and maintenance will help keep your equipment performing beautifully for years to come.

The good news? Caring for your molds is simple and only takes a few minutes.

Many of our customers have reported using their Signature Blue Liners for 7 to 10 years and counting. A few minutes of care today can help ensure your liners continue performing beautifully for many years to come.

Why We Share This Information

At Winston & Walter, we believe that buying a mold is only the beginning of the journey.

We are committed to being transparent about our products, how they are made, and how to get the most out of them. While many manufacturers simply ship their products and move on, we believe our customers deserve the knowledge and support needed to help their equipment perform at its best.

Over the years, we’ve learned that many common concerns, such as tiny silicone particles, white residue, storage questions, or general wear and tear, are often easy to prevent or resolve with a little information and routine care.

Rather than waiting for problems to arise, we’d rather share what we’ve learned openly so you can enjoy your molds with confidence from day one.

Our goal has never been to simply sell molds. Our goal is to help soap makers succeed. Whether you’re making your very first batch or your ten-thousandth, we want your Winston & Walter equipment to remain a trusted part of your soap-making journey for years to come.

If you ever have questions, concerns, or simply need advice, please reach out. We’re always happy to help.

Thank you for growing with us.

With gratitude,
July and the Winston & Walter Family

Signature Blue Liner Care

Before First Use

We recommend washing all silicone liners and cavity molds before their first use.

Like most silicone products manufactured in factories, small silicone particles, dust, or residue from the production process may occasionally remain on the surface. This is completely normal and easily removed.

Simply:

  • Soak in warm water with a small amount of dish soap.
  • Allow to soak for 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Wash gently with a soft cloth or sponge.
  • Rinse thoroughly and air dry.

Once cleaned, your liner is ready to use.

Quick Cleaning Between Batches

One of the things we love most about our Signature Blue Liners is how easy they are to clean.

After unmolding your soap:

  • Wipe the liner with a damp cloth and warm water.
  • Remove any soap residue, dust, or loose particles.
  • Allow the liner to dry before storing.

For extra cleaning, a disinfecting wipe, such as a Lysol® wipe, may be used to remove dust and freshen the surface. This is optional, but it can be helpful if your liner has been sitting out on your work table or in storage.

Seeing Small Blue Specks in Soap?

Occasionally, a customer may notice a tiny blue speck on their first batch of soap.

In most cases, this is simply a small silicone particle left over from manufacturing that was not removed during the initial wash.

The good news is that this is easily prevented by washing the liner before its first use.

If you notice this on an early batch, simply clean the liner thoroughly before your next soap session.

White Film or Hazy Residue

Occasionally, you may notice a white film or haze on your liner.

This is usually not damage to the silicone.

Common causes include:

  • Hard water minerals
  • Soap residue
  • Fragrance oils
  • Sodium lactate buildup
  • Cleaning product residue

To remove it:

  • Wash with warm water and dish soap.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Wipe with 91% isopropyl alcohol if needed.
  • Rinse again and allow to dry.

In most cases, the liner will return to its original appearance after cleaning.

Storage Tips

To maximize the lifespan of your liner:

  • Store flat whenever possible.
  • Avoid folding or creasing the silicone.
  • Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Make sure the liner is completely dry before storing.
  • Avoid stacking heavy items on top of liners.

Wooden Mold Care

Wood is a natural material and may expand or contract slightly as humidity and temperature change throughout the seasons.

To keep your wooden molds looking their best:

  • Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
  • Do not soak wooden components in water.
  • Dry immediately if water comes into contact with the wood.
  • Store in a dry environment.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to excessive humidity.

If soap batter spills onto the wood, simply wipe it off promptly with a damp cloth.

A well-cared-for wooden mold can provide many years of reliable service.

HDPE Mold Care

Our HDPE molds are built to handle the demands of everyday soap making.

HDPE is durable, moisture-resistant, and easy to clean.

For routine maintenance:

  • Wipe with a damp cloth after use.
  • Clean with warm water and mild dish soap when needed.
  • Dry before storing.
  • Avoid dragging sharp tools across the surface.
  • Store flat when possible.

Unlike wood, HDPE is not affected by moisture and does not require special treatments or conditioners.

The occasional scratch from normal use is purely cosmetic and will not affect performance.
